It's fair to say that Rio is definitely our favourite city so far, despite being the most expensive place we've been to. What's really made our time here so enjoyable is the great hostel we've been staying in, Stone Of A Beach (geddit?), just 5 mins walk from Copacabana Beach. We've met some great people here, including cool California brothers Walter & Danny (originally from Peru) and Sarita & David, a lovely couple from Vancouver on their pre-wedding honeymoon, who we've spent most of the last 2 weeks with. And last, but not least, 'Davidiano' Hodgkinson who came out to see us from the UK. Despite (he confessed) being out of his comfort-zone for the most part, he had the time of his life along with the rest of us. Not sure he's become a life-long hostel fan though!
We've still more to see and do in the next few days before we move on to Argentina, but we've managed to cram plenty in so far, including:
- Live football at the Maracana Stadium, watching the home team Flamengo win 5-1
- Playing volleyball at night on Copacabana Beach
- Partying in the street in Lapa
- Getting a taste for the local drink Caiparinha... every night
- Hang-gliding off a mountain, over the city and onto the beach
- Getting up close and personal with Christ The Redeemer on a Sunday morning
- Beach action in Ipanema
- Watching Brazil vs Argentina on the hostel's rooftop bar projected onto the high-rise building next door
Before we leave, we plan to take the cable-car up Sugarloaf Mountain, visit the Museum of Modern Art, the Contemporary Art Museum and buy some Havaianas. Until then, enjoy the first batch of pics...
